Day -1: Packing

So this is the first post on my little blog. I made this thing to chronicle my adventures on this Europe trip that I'll be going on for the next two weeks, post-college graduation. I guess the idea is to try to get on a computer each day (or thereabouts) at the hostels I'm staying at and make a post of all the stuff I did and saw. That way you all can look at it at work (or unemployment) and imagine how great it was! Just speaking from experience, I've had boring jobs before, believe me. Not that I'm saying my adventures will be more fun than whatever you're doing -- but they probably will be.

I feel like after supporting me for 22 years my family deserves to see firsthand what I'm doing over there. If you're not my immediate family and sent me a card, you have probably financed this in some way too (thank yous coming - seriously). If you gave me happy graduation wishes, you also helped assure me that I'll be able to find a job, thus convincing me to spend all my money. If you did none of those things, you're a freeloader! but I don't mind. Enjoy.

So right now it's 11:11 at night (make a wish, right?) I'm not going to tell you my wish, but it has something to do with thunderstorms and flying. If I told you, it wouldn't come true, which is undesirable.

Anyway, Kate and I are busy packing. Actually I'm making this blog thing, to get a break from packing. It's exhausting, and I'm not nearly ready. My mom would probably be panicking; good thing she's not here. I'm staying in my friend's apartment with a bunch of people, stuff is everywhere all around the room, and it's a little crazy. I bought a pretty cool pack to put all my stuff in; now it's a matter of actually putting my stuff in it. Not as easy as you'd think. I've been criticizing a ton of people for packing too much stuff. Now that it's time for me to pack my own bag, truth is I'm not much better. Cross the fingers that I don't forget anything here (passport!).

Tomorrow is probably going to be pretty crazy getting to the airport and not missing the flight. I have a tendency to do stuff like that. Technically it's never happened before, but Kate missed a flight last year that I was driving her to. It looks bad on my record, but it really was her fault. But tomorrow is the great test of on timeness. I was pretty much late to every single class in college. I've heard it's frowned upon to show up late to a job. However, I'm feeling like this is more fun than both of those. Thus, I'm hoping that it will be different.

We're waking up early and taking Kate and 2 other friends to JFK airport in Queens. They're going to Europe too, but on a different trip - hopefully we'll get to run into them at some point though! Then I'm continuing on to Jersey to Jon's house, and his parents are going to take the two of us to Newark, where our flight is sometime in the evening. We're flying on Virgin Atlantic, which I've heard is good stuff. The flight goes overnight, and lands in Heathrow in London in the morning.

As far as planning, we've at least figured out where we're going - London, Paris, Switzerland, Rome & Barcelona - and figured out accommodations for the first two stops. We've also got a bunch of tips from some insiders who have stayed and lived in the places we're going. Gary Dubs has been in London, Kate King in Paris and Wes lived in Rome, although he's little help, as you might expect. Hopefully that means that we'll have half a clue about what to do and where to go in these places. First and foremost I just want to get there and back. Have you seen Taken? I too have a particular set of skills, but they're not as useful as Liam Neeson's. We'll try to avoid that kind of thing altogether.

So tomorrow it begins, assuming we can get to the airport. But that said, it's definitely time to get back to packing! Thanks for tuning in - I'll try not to disappoint. We'll catch ya'll in London.

  1. Andrew,
Sounds like a blast. Hope you make the flight! I'm sure you'll be tired & probably won't be so entertaining every day, but I'll enjoy seeing & reading whatever you have time for.
    Love you!!
